Diverting Waste, Creating Impact
As part of the recent 20,000-square-foot renovation, the University of Washington partnered with Shaw Contract to recycle the existing EcoWorx® carpet tile through the re[TURN]® Reclamation Program. In total, 6,072 pounds, the equivalent to 1,104 square yards of carpet tile were diverted from Seattle-area landfills and returned to Georgia where they will be turned into new EcoWorx carpet tile.

Existing EcoWorx® carpet tile is recycled from the renovation site and staged to be shipped back to Shaw Contract. The carpet will become new EcoWorx carpet tile.
This initiative reflects the university’s commitment to sustainability and participation in a circular economy, a system where materials are reused not wasted. By choosing to recycle, the University of Washington helped reduce landfill waste and conserve valuable resources.

A First Impression That Lasts
The renovation didn’t stop at recycling. The DJC now features high-performance, PVC-free flooring designed to withstand the demands of high-traffic environments while supporting the university's sustainability goals. Specified products include:
At the entrance, guests are greeted by a striking custom “W” logo, a nod to Husky pride, crafted from Welcome II entryway carpet tile in contrasting light and dark tones. This branding element, created in collaboration with flooring dealer partner Spectra Seattle, sets the tone for the premium experience inside the suite.
Entryway carpet tile plays a critical role in trapping dirt and moisture from entering the DJC, reducing maintenance needs and extending the life of interior flooring.
Stain and Scratch Resistant Hard Surface Flooring
Inside the DJC, the university selected Mineral Floor Origin and Basis, a PVC-free hybrid flooring that combines the durability of porcelain with the comfort and ease of resilient flooring. This innovative solution is ideal for high-traffic spaces like the DJC, offering;
- Superior durability
- Ease of maintenance
- PVC-free hard surface option
By selecting Mineral Floor, the University of Washington chose a flooring solution built to withstand the demands of the DJC, where food and beverages are served throughout game day in a high-traffic, premium hospitality setting. Mineral Floor delivers durability and ease of maintenance without compromising performance or sustainability.
